Man gets cancer 'miracle' ahead of New Year

 A team of doctors at the Merle M. Mahr Cancer Center at Baptist Health Madisonville put Starr on a regimen of two days of chemotherapy for six months, starting in July. The oncologist decided that halfway through they would do another scan to see if the mass was responding to the treatment.

"They did another scan, and three months later, nothing," Starr said, showing his PET scan from Oct. 11. The large orb was nowhere to be found.

"Doctors expected it to be shrinking but not for it to be completely gone," Starr noted. Whether it was a miracle or positive results to medical oncology, Starr is just happy to be cancer-free.

A closer view of the screen at the Mahr Cancer Center shows the glowing bulb on the right is missing from the scan on the left four months later.

"The doctor's never going to say the word 'miracle' -- what the doctor said is 'this is the best possible solution that we could have possibly hoped for,' " Starr said. "I'm confident it was a miracle. I thank God and the doctors for their efforts."
